This week’s photo shows a 24 inch disc pelletizer (pan granulator) with a vibratory feeder, liquid storage tank, pump and movable base. This pelletizer was built for a proprietary company to use for testing purposes.

In the process of disc pelletizing, raw material fines such as limestone, fertilizer or flyash are converted into pellets. First, raw material enters the pan. Next, tumbling occurs as the disc rotates, while a binder helps particles to become tacky, ultimately forming small particles (nuclei). Through coalescence, the particles then grow into larger pellets.

Small disc pelletizers such as this one are ideal for running batch tests of material, as is done in the FEECO Lab. This not only helps determine the feasibility of agglomeration, but can also help determine pan variables needed for producing the desired pellet, as well as what type of binder will work best, among other things.

FEECO has been custom-building disc pelletizers for over 60 years. For more information on these machines or other agglomeration techniques, contact us today!
