Agglomeration, the process of particle size enlargement, is used to solve material problems and improve product characteristics. In general, agglomerating a material can offer many benefits, including:
- End product benefits– dust-free product handling, and improved product characteristics. Ex: The agglomeration of cattle manure into dry fertilizer granules makes them storable for later use, and easier to handle, as well as apply.
- Raw material benefits– dust loss deterrence, simplified transportation, and easier handling. Ex: Fly ash is a fine powder, making it dusty and easily wind-blown. Agglomerating it can make it easier to handle and use in additional applications, as well as more stable for landfilling.
- Economic benefits– the transformation of waste can create a more marketable product. Ex: Unsalable limestone fines can be transformed into marketable limestone soil amendment pellets, creating a revenue stream from what once likely incurred disposal costs.
- Environmental benefits– potential to eradicate the need for landfill. Ex: Waste paper sludge has been processed and transformed into a variety of lawn and garden products, reducing the need to landfill such materials.
