Variables to Consider when Operating a Pan Pelletizer

Pan pelletizer operation is oftentimes considered an art because of the many mechanical and process variables that must be properly combined to achieve the desired pellet characteristics. A trained operator is necessary to create the most efficient pelletization process, and the most ideal end-product. The list below outlines the variables that must be considered during pan pelletizer operation:

Mechanical variables:

  • Pan angle
  • Pan speed
  • Spray nozzles (including nozzle quantity, location, type etc.)

Process variables:

  • Raw material characteristics (fine/course; sticky/not-sticky)
  • Ratio of dry to wet product
  • Binder type
  • Desired size of finished product
  • Raw material moisture content
  • Feed Rate
  • Binder Rate

While the mechanical and process variables are wide and far, they offer an opportunity to fine-tune and customize the pelletization process unique to a specific material, and ultimately create a premium end-product.
