Photo of the Week: Rotary Drum Gears

This week’s photo shows a rotary drum gear before and after replacement.

The gear on the left is exhibiting excessive wear and inadequate lubrication. This is an example of extreme wear, and was caused by tramp material entering the gear mesh.

At right, the gear has been replaced and properly lubricated. As can be seen in the photo, the grease covers the entire surface of the gear teeth, particularly where the gears mesh. Proper lubrication and appropriate grease selection is critical to prolonging gear life.

While the gear pictured required replacement, in cases of less wear, further damage can sometimes be prevented by adjusting the pinion gear and/or modifying the lubrication schedule.

Gear replacement is just one of the many field services FEECO can provide to keep your rotary drum running in optimal condition. Our skilled Customer Service Engineers can inspect, diagnose, and treat any issues you may be experiencing with your rotary drum, no matter what brand it is. Additionally, annual inspections can help to catch problems like this before they have a chance to turn serious.
