Rotary drum tires, also known as riding rings, are a structural component of the rotary drum, facilitating smooth and concentric rotation and providing support to the drum shell. 

What drum tires are available? 

FEECO supplies tires in 1045, 4140, and 4340 stainless steel. Sizes are available all the way up to 210” outside diameter (up to 190” interior diameter), with a face width up to 32”. Edges can be supplied beveled or non-beveled. 

How often do tires require replacement? 

Since tires can be resurfaced via grinding, they only require replacement when they exhibit signs of severe wear, such as cracks or thin spots. 

Tire lifespan depends on the specific operating conditions of the installation, but ranges anywhere from 2-20 years depending on how well the drum is maintained (adjustments made incorrectly to trunnion skew, as well as poor gear mesh and vibrations can greatly reduce the lifespan of the tire). 

Since severely damaged tires render the drum inoperable, tires should be replaced prior to failure to avoid excessive downtime and additional repairs. 

What is the lead time for tires? 

While circumstances may vary, tire lead time typically ranges from 6-14 weeks depending on size. 

Is there anything else I need to keep in mind when ordering a tire?

Tire replacement is a good time to upgrade the tire mounting system as well. Drum tire mounting techniques have advanced in recent years and the new floating tire assembly offers significant benefits over previous designs.  

Because the tire is an integral component of the drum’s mechanical stability, a full laser alignment should be performed once the new tire has been installed.
