What are the challenges in processing limestone?

Limestone is prone to a variety of processing challenges, all of which depend on the unique deposit and the type of processing itself.

Abrasion can occur during limestone drying. Heavy-duty rotary dryers are recommended to handle raw limestone’s abrasive characteristics, in addition to adding custom features such as specialized linings.

Emission control is the central challenge in limestone calcination. Particle matter pollutants are a common issue with rotary kilns specifically, and they require the application of a particulate control system to counteract the problem.

Clumping can also be an issue in limestone processing. When working with powdered limestone, a drying step is often utilized prior to processing, in order to aid in prevention of clumping and the potential to congest subsequent equipment. Knocking systems can be added to rotary dryers when drying pellets as well, to reduce clumping during the drying stage. Anti-caking additives are also an option.
