Photo of the Week: Disc Pelletizer Expanded Metal

This week’s photo shows the expanded metal on a disc pelletizer (pan granulator). During pelletizing, a layer of build-up across the surface of the disc is needed to aid in pellet formation. This layer allows the pellets to roll on top of like material, which helps to “grow” the pellets. However, this can be difficult to achieve on large discs such as this one. In this case, expanded metal can be used to help establish the layer of build-up over the disc surface.

The expanded metal also aids in pellet formation by creating a surface with more friction, which improves the rolling action of the bed of pellets.

Also worth noting, is that the plow blades shown in this picture have ceramic facings, which improve resistance to abrasion so plows don’t wear out too quickly.
