Rotary dryers are known as the workhorses of the industrial drying industry, but like any robust equipment, they are not immune to processing challenges. The challenges often vary on the specific material being processed, with some requiring additional preparation, and others, routine maintenance. Generally speaking, however, the most common challenges faced during rotary dryer processing include:
Build-up. Knocking systems can be mounted to the drum’s exterior to ‘knock off’ build-up inside of the drum, while the drum is in operation. The most effective way to protect against build-up, however, is to prevent it. Back-mixing feedstock or designing a less aggressive flight system are options, all dependent upon the material.
- Corrosion and Abrasion. Material of construction should be carefully selected, as some are more resistant to corrosion and/or abrasion than others. The dryer should also be routinely inspected. Maintenance personnel should check surface areas and cracks for signs of damage, catching any potential issues early on to help prolong equipment life.
FEECO has designed, manufactured and serviced rotary dryers since 1951. For more detailed information on the equipment, download our e-book, or contact us today!
