This week’s photo highlights a sparger support system, or mounting bracket, inside of a coating drum. Spargers are commonly used in coating applications to coat pellets or granules after pelletization or compaction.
Coating is done for various reasons, such as to change the color of the agglomerates, to protect the agglomerates, and to even control dust or caking issues. The exact method used to coat a material depends on the material to be coated, as well as the coating agent. Generally speaking, however, the process looks like this: the mounting bracket is located on the inside of the coating drum, and it holds the sparger, or spray system piping. The sparger releases the liquid coating and the agglomerates pick it up as the drum rotates. The continuous rolling action helps to evenly distribute the coating material onto the exterior of the agglomerates.
