- Customer: Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)
- Plant Location: Canada
- Industry: Steel
- Major Equipment: (4) Balling Drums
- Material Handled: Iron Ore
- Engineer: FEECO International, Inc.
- Process: FEECO was contracted to assist the Iron Ore Company of Canada in an expansion of their existing operation.
After visiting the plant and working with IOC personnel, FEECO engineered a higher capacity system consisting of four (4) 16.4’ diameter x 42.6’ long (5m diameter x 13m long) balling drums. At the time, they were the largest iron ore balling drums in the world.
Iron ore concentrates are fed with a binder to the balling drums, where the tumbling action agglomerates them into pellets about the size of marbles.
The use of a balling drum increases the efficiency of the steel making process by significantly reducing the amount of dust and fines that can become entrained in the blast furnace and lost as waste.
The drums included an adjustable slope base, flanged sections, discharge scroll, and 6mm rubber liner.
