There are numerous characteristics that make raw manure an unideal feedstock for granulation.
Pre-conditioning manure must take place before the manure can be effectively used as a feedstock for optimal granulation to occur.
Pre-conditioning focuses on:
Particle size distribution: Large particles need to be removed or ground prior to granulation. A particle size distribution of around 60 mesh is best.
Moisture content: Moisture content is critical to granulation success. Poultry manure has an ideal moisture content of under 20%, whereas hog and dairy manure should be between 60-80% moisture.
Material composition: The material should be examined during the pre-conditioning stage, to see if it contains course fibers or bedding, both of which could inhibit granulation or dilute the nutrient content. The material should also be analyzed to see if it contains natural binding agents.
