Synthetic Gypsum Processing Resources
Synthetic gypsum is a by-product of industrial processing. The most common form of synthetic gypsum, sometimes called syn gyp, is FGD gypsum, or Flue Gas Desulphurization Gypsum. FGD gypsum is created at fossil-fuel burning power plants, when sulfur dioxide is removed from gas pollutants.
After the Clean Air Act mandated this process in the 1980s, people began to discover that this by-product could serve as a synthetic form of gypsum, and could even replace natural gypsum in many applications. However, synthetic gypsum requires processing before it can be used, and interest in processing has since been on the rise.
