THERMAL DESORPTION


Thermal desorption utilizes heat to cause separation without combustion. It is widely used to drive off volatile components from inorganic minerals. Thermal desorption is a frequent approach to treating contaminated organics in environmental remediation efforts. It is most widely used in treating sludges and sediments.

The Thermal Desorption Process

Organic combustion breaks down organics in an excess air combustion environment, leaving behind ash and producing heat that can be utilized elsewhere.

 

Custom Thermal Desorption Kilns

Rotary kilns used to carry out the thermal desorption process may be referred to as desorbers. Depending on the material being processed, the rotary kiln may be of the direct-fired or indirect-fired configuration. FEECO rotary kilns are custom engineered around the parameters of the specific application for optimal processing.

Batch/Feasibility and Pilot-Scale Testing

The FEECO Innovation Center is a unique testing facility where we can test your material at both batch and pilot scale in order to work out process variables and design commercial-scale units, as well as scale up the process. While the needs of every project are unique, testing generally follows the stages below:

Feasibility/Proof of Concept: Muffle furnace testing along with Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and chemical analysis to determine your specific material's chemistry and reaction to heat.
Proof of Product:Batch testing where it is determined whether a product can be made to the required specifications.


Proof of Process: A continuous testing phase that aims to establish the equipment setup and parameters required for commercial production of your specific material.
Process/Product Optimization: An in-depth study to optimize your specific material’s characteristics and/or production parameters for an operating industrial kiln.
