The best way to control material build-up in a rotary dryer is to prevent it in the first place.

Custom Flight Design. Build-up can be prevented through the design of less aggressive flights, or material lifters. Material tends to build-up in sharp corners, and a less aggressive flight design can lessen the tendency for build up to occur there.

Additionally, a bald, or flightless, section at the beginning of the dryer allows feedstock to dry a moment before it moves on to the flights, also lessening the chances for build-up to occur.

Back Mixing. Feedstock can be adjusted through a technique called back mixing. Back mixing occurs when dry material is added to the wet, raw material to make the material less sticky.

Back mixing is not always an option, because some materials continue to be sticky for a wide range of moisture levels. In situations such as these, a heated screw could be a more efficient dryer choice.
