Photo of the Week: Trunnion Wheel Pitting

This week’s photo shows pitting on a trunnion wheel.

Pitting, or deep indentations, can develop from improper lubrication and/or normal wear and tear associated with trunnion wheel operation. Pits are never ideal; they will expand and cause the weight of the drum to be unevenly distributed. This can eventually affect other drum components, resulting in severe damage and downtime.

To combat pitting issues, grinding is recommended to restore the wheel surface to like-new condition. Grinding is also more cost-effective than tire replacement.

Should you notice pitting on your trunnion wheels, contact a FEECO Customer Service Engineer. We can measure the pit depths and advise when it’s time for grinding, or advise if grinding is no longer an option and replacement wheels should be sought instead.
