This week’s photo shows two small rotary dryers with external metal pieces. The metal pieces, or ramps, serve as an early version of the “knocking” system to keep material from building up or caking inside the drum.

When material enters the drum, the drum rotates, and internal flights shower the material with heated air. During this process, material may stick to itself or to the drum’s interior. Knocking systems are then used to manage material build up and increase drum efficiency. As the drum rotates, a weighted mount rides up the ramp and drops onto the drum, knocking off interior material that may be sticking inside the drum.

FEECO designs and constructs rotary dryers to fit your specific needs. For more information on rotary dryers or knocking system options, contact us today!
