This week’s photo shows a thermal image of a rotary dryer. FEECO’s Customer Service Engineers frequently use a thermal imaging camera to assess rotary dryers and kilns during equipment audits or annual inspections.

A thermal imaging camera can help engineers to easily see where trouble spots might exist; the camera can be used to check for hot spots on the shell (to indicate overall shell integrity, or a failure in refractory), check for leakage around the seals, and even check bearing and drive component temperatures.

This photo shows a rotary dryer in good standing: gradual shifts in temperature can be seen on the shell, indicating no hot spots are present, and no leakage around the seal can be observed.

Thermal imaging is just one tool that FEECO Customer Service Engineers utilize to fully assess a piece of equipment. FEECO Customer Service Engineers recommend annual inspections on rotary equipment in order to catch potential problems before they have the opportunity to escalate.
