Photo of the Week: Girth Gear and Lubrication Nozzle

Today’s photo highlights a girth gear (left) and gear lubrication nozzle (right), both components of a rotary drum.

The gear drive assembly is mounted on the outside of the shell circumference. It meshes with a small gear drive, and causes the rotary drum to rotate.

The gear should be lubricated at all times, because without it, the gear wears too quickly.

As a general guideline, the lubricant used should have the following properties:

  • It must be sufficiently fluid to reach the contact surfaces.
  • It must be free from corrosive elements.
  • It must be capable of maintaining its lubricating qualities under the operating conditions of temperature, moisture, etc.
