Photo of the Week: Rotary Kiln Leaf Seals

This week’s photo shows a rotary kiln’s leaf seals. The set-up consists of a series of overlapping spring steel plates that are attached to the housing, and ride on the rotating shell.

Rotary kilns run at a higher temperature than the ambient air, thus any ambient air that leaks into the rotary kiln will cause the temperature inside of the kiln to drop. Quality leaf seals then function to minimize air leakage into the kiln, which ultimately allows the chemical reaction to take place, reduces fuel consumption, and can potentially increase capacity.

While the featured seal image is applied to a rotary kiln, FEECO offers a variety of seal options for rotary dryers and kilns. All seals are not only a part of initial equipment install, but can be inspected, repaired, or replaced by FEECO’s Service Team.
