Flights, or material lifters, play an essential role in promoting efficient heat transfer in rotary dryers, coolers, and in some cases, kilns, helping to create the optimal “curtain” of material cascading through the air flow.

What flights are available?

FEECO offers a range of options when it comes to flights; in addition to providing direct replacements and standard designs, we can also design custom flights. We also have an in-house flight simulator for testing optimal flight designs.

We can supply flights in the following configurations:

  • Single or double bend
  • Radial
  • Straight
  • Sawtooth
  • Custom

Flights can be provided as a bolt-in or welded-on design. Options in materials of construction include:

  • Carbon steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Specialty alloys

How often do flights require replacement?

Depending on the specific operating conditions and the material being processed, flights typically last between 5 and 10 years. They only require replacement when they become worn to the point that they affect efficiency.

Because flights are so integral to the process efficiency, replacing worn or missing flights can lower fuel costs and improve performance.

What is the lead time for flights?

Lead time for replacement flights can range anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks, or longer if testing or custom flight design is necessary.

Is there anything else I need to keep in mind when ordering flights?

When replacing flights, consider if a different material of construction could provide a longer flight lifespan. Also consider whether or not the mounting method could be improved.

Further, since the rotary drum will need to be shut down to install the new flights, this may also be a good time to consider conducting an annual inspection or equipment audit on the unit.

How can I order flights?

Contact a FEECO Customer Service Engineer for a quote by filling out our contact form. The following info is necessary for a quote:

  • Drum size (length, diameter)
  • Material of construction
  • Number of rows of flights
  • Flight specs (if available)
  • Material being processed
  • Preferred mounting method (weld-in or bolt-in with brackets)
