Biogas has been a popular topic of discussion lately, as the need for energy increases, and sources are being run dry. Sometimes referred to as swamp gas, landfill gas, or digester gas, biogas is generated from anaerobic digesters such as animal manure, sewage, and municipal solid waste. When upgraded to the necessary level of purity, biogas can be used as an alternative fuel source.(Source: AFDC)

This past June saw the 11th annual Biogas USA East & Midwest Conference in Chicago, Illinois, and Feeco International was in attendance. The conference, which features a collaboration of industry experts, researches, developers, operators, and vendors to the biogas industry, is a result of successful biogas events in Austria, Belgium, the UK, and the USA (San Francisco).

Among the many topics, technological advancements in biogas, successful case studies, and overcoming policy hurdles in plant start-ups were discussed. Much of the conversation was around upgrading biogas to pipeline quality natural gas.

Currently, there are more than 150 on-farm anaerobic digesters in operation in the USA, and more than 100 new anaerobic digesters in planning stages. There are also more than 540 plants across the USA for recovering landfill gas.

Feeco’s role in this industry is to offer an alternative direct-use of biogas for the production of value-added products, such as bio-fertilizer, soil amendments, from underutilized materials such as manure, litter, biosolids, and other wastes. Feeco has already contributed much to this industry through means of engineering, granulation, thermal processing, and agglomeration.
