Photo of the Week: Cold Gap Inspection

This week’s photo shows a combination of feeler gauges and a caliper, tools used to measure the space between the flotation blocks and inside face of the rotary drum tire, or the cold gap of the tire.

The distance between the tire and flotation blocks varies per the diameter of the drum, but must be a specified amount to ensure that the tire is able to creep successfully while the drum is in operation. If the measurement is off, the tire will need to be re-shimmed, or premature wear on the keepers and flotation blocks can result.

Cold gap inspections should be completed on any newly installed rotary drum, and they should also be a part of the drum’s annual inspection. FEECO’s aftermarket engineers can travel directly to your facility to perform the inspection, both as a commission service or as part of the annual inspection.
