The girth gear is part of the drive assembly of a rotary drum, be it a dryer, cooler, kiln, or otherwise. This assembly type uses interlocking girth and pinion gears to drive rotation of the drum. 

What girth gear types and sizes are available? 

FEECO can provide gears ranging in size from 60” to 180” in diameter in either 4340 or 4140 stainless steel. 

How often does a girth gear require replacement? 

A girth gear experiences wear over time and should be replaced when wear becomes excessive, such as when teeth are missing, damaged, or worn to the point that they inhibit proper gear mesh. Unusual vibrations in the drive area, a growling sound, or wear on tires and trunnions could also indicate that a gear replacement is needed. 

What is the lead time for a girth gear? 

While circumstances may vary, the lead time for a replacement gear typically ranges from 8-16 weeks depending on the size. 

Is there anything else I need to keep in mind when ordering a girth gear? 

FEECO recommends replacing both the girth and pinion gears at the same time to avoid the risk of damaging a new gear by pairing it with an old, worn-out gear. 

Additionally, because the gear is part of the drum’s structure and mechanical stability, once the gear has been replaced, a full laser alignment will be needed to realign the drum.
