In recent years, people have become more aware about the importance to recycle electronics instead of throwing them in the trash. In addition to the environmental benefits of preventing toxic materials from contaminating soil and water, there are also precious metals in these products that can be reclaimed and used again.
In the past, FEECO has partnered with a large natural resources company to reclaim the nickel from old cell phone batteries, laptop batteries and other nickel bearing wastes. We are currently doing a similar test project with a company on reclaiming copper from printed circuit boards (pcb) and copper bearing wastes.
The Price of Nickel and Copper
The price of nickel and copper can fluctuate greatly and depending on economic conditions, it often makes more sense financially to reclaim the nickel than to go through the beneficiation of turning a nickel ore into a nickel ingot. Many times there are also government subsidies and support that may make reclaiming these precious metals more attractive.
