This week’s photo comes from the FEECO Fabrication Facility, where our team is assembling castable refractory inside of a kiln. Refractory is a crucial component in direct fired rotary kilns. It insulates and protects the kiln’s shell from high internal temperatures, and also maintains heat retention.

While castable is seen in today’s photo, brick is also a common option for lining a rotary kiln. The kiln’s operating temperature and material chemistry ultimately determine which refractory is ideal for the process at hand.

Each refractory option has its advantages and disadvantages, too. Brick and castable are comparable in price, however, brick is more costly to install because it is more labor intensive. Though brick is ideal for abrasive materials because it is more wear resistant.
