This week’s photo highlights a rotary drum temperature inspection.

An IR gun, pictured, is directed at the rotary drum, to record the surface temperature of the object in sight. Items such as the drum shell, drive components, bearings, and even the material as it discharges from the drum can all be temperature checked.

Recording the temperature of rotary drum components should be done on a routine basis, as an “off” temperature reading is usually the first sign of an issue. For example, a hot spot detected on a rotary kiln shell could signify a refractory failure.

As with any industrial piece of equipment, detecting and remediating any issues promptly is crucial to the health and longevity of the drum.
