Today’s photo highlights various pellet samples produced in the FEECO Innovation Center.

The Innovation Center offers pelletization test work to transform raw material fines or dusts into round, spherical pellets as outlined in today’s featured photo. Test work is designed around each customer’s unique material and anticipated end-product.

The Innovation Center is equipped for small, batch tests on a single piece of equipment, through the use of a disc pelletizer (also known as a pan granulator) or agglomeration drum, with the disc pelletizer being the more common choice for the pelletization process. Pin mixers or paddle mixers are also in-house to condition material prior to pelletizing. A continuous process loop with multiple pieces of equipment including drying, particle sizing, and product recycle capabilities are also available.

Particle characteristics such as crush strength, attrition, solubility and more are measured and adjusted during the testing process. Additionally, FEECO’s partnership with Rockwell Automation allows us to record operating data in a real time setting, helping us to catch any upset in addition during testing, while also allowing us to use the data to assist in process scale-up and design.

Pelletizing a material can offer countless benefits, from improving product performance, to easing handling challenges, and even targeting desired characteristics. Testing is also an important part of process and product development. For each of these reasons, customers rely on FEECO for their pelletization needs.
