Today’s photo highlights a batch rotary kiln in use at the FEECO Innovation Center.

A chute, pictured left, carries the material to be processed, transporting it to the kiln’s interior. The two chords, or thermal couples, read the bed (material) and air temperatures during the testing process.

Batch kiln tests determine the time and temperature required to achieve product quality. The tests also help determine the maximum temperature that the feed can tolerate; 1400° C is the temperature of the material inside the kiln from today’s photo.

FEECO’s Process Experts also take material samples at regular intervals to define the extent of reaction at various stages. Several gas temperatures and heating rates can also be tested to govern the effect of temperature on reaction rate.
