Waste to Value: The Core of Waste Stream Diversion

Waste to Value

As the need for more sustainable practices grows exponentially, the need to find solutions that divert waste streams from landfills is ever on the rise. Companies are cropping up around the world to solve today’s waste problems, looking to divert industrial, business, and even household wastes from overstuffed landfills. And while the term “waste stream diversion” may be new to many, at the heart of the waste stream diversion effort, is one of FEECO’s core concepts: waste to value. For decades, FEECO has been working with companies to develop processes that convert once thought of wastes, into value-added, marketable products.

Over our 61 years in business, FEECO has developed many process systems and equipment for converting wastes into value-added products, ultimately diverting tons upon tons of wastes from landfills. According to FEECO Australasia Operations Manager, Barry Wilson, “Waste exists only through a lack of imagination. At FEECO, we have both the imagination to drive change, and the expertise to make it happen.”

FEECO has worked with companies across the board, from entrepreneurs and small start-ups, to Fortune-100 companies. One of the most common requests FEECO receives, is to find an economical way to utilize process by-products. Often times, by-products are deemed as “wastes,” because they exist in an unusable form. However, these by-products often contain valuable components. FEECO works with these companies to transform these “wastes” into a more usable form, recovering the inherent value in the product. Such is the case with power plant stack emissions.

Coal-fired power plant emissions contain sulfurous oxides which must be treated before entering the atmosphere. The ammonium sulfate scrubbed out of the exhaust gases typically goes to a landfill-, and the clean gases exit into the atmosphere. But FEECO has found a way to transform these sulfur rich by-products into granulated fertilizers, diverting this “waste” from landfills. The recovery of gold or copper from low grade ores, the conversion of animal waste into sustainable fertilizers, the transformation of corn flours into animal feed, and the creation of cat litter from corn cobs, are all additional examples of FEECO’s waste transformation expertise.

The fundamental aspect of waste stream diversion is seeing the potential value in waste. FEECO utilizes our extensive knowledge and experience in combination with our lab testing facility, to develop cutting-edge technologies that will help build a more sustainable future. As a technology-driven company, FEECO continues to be a leader in the waste transformation industry.

“What the world today calls waste — to FEECO International, they are really just raw materials for products that haven’t been invented yet.” – Dan Madigan (President)
